Europa Hits and Misses – VAR Controversy Not Liverpool’s Biggest Issue

The Europa Clipper’s goal is to assess whether Europa contains an ocean beneath its icy surface. Repeated flybys will give scientists more insight into Europa’s shape, structure and properties.

Liverpool have experienced another difficult week since a loss to Spurs and an unfavorable refereeing decision over Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal, though not due to VAR issues alone.

1. Luis Diaz’s goal against Spurs

Liverpool’s defeat at Tottenham could have been much more disastrous had their match officials not quickly responded to what they described as “significant human error”.

Luis Diaz’s goal was wrongfully disallowed during Saturday’s game due to an error by VAR official Darren England; replays show otherwise. Audio of the decision-making process revealed he misunderstood Simon Hooper’s explanation that his check had been completed.

Liverpool issued a statement condemning such mistakes as undermining sporting integrity and announced they will explore options for resolution. Their words follow Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota being dismissed in their 2-1 loss that left them down to just nine men by final whistle.

2. Virgil van Dijk’s injury against Everton

Jurgen Klopp says Virgil van Dijk is “not even close” to returning for Liverpool’s Merseyside derby against Everton on May 31. Van Dijk suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury due to a rash challenge from England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford that will keep him sidelined for several months.

Losing one of its top defenders will be another significant setback for an already struggling defence that has seen Joel Matip and Joe Gomez sustain serious injuries this year, although Liverpool now have greater depth than before with Ibrahima Konate and Nat Phillips also available to fill any holes left by these absentees.

In the event that Van Dijk becomes unavailable for further action, Klopp could rely on two key players and Michael Keane as support to navigate them through their busiest period of the season.

3. Harry Kane’s studs-up challenge on Andy Robertson

There were cries for Harry Kane to be shown a red card after he was booked for his studs-up challenge on Andy Robertson in Tottenham’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool, however this incident wasn’t reviewed by VAR and referee Paul Tierney only gave Kane a yellow card as punishment.

Klopp was outraged by this decision and expressed his displeasure by lashing out: “How can you continue? This tackle is reckless and endangers opponents. Never before have I witnessed such an unsafe challenge and why you keep this guy on.”

Officials seem to give with one hand and take back with two, which has become an ongoing source of contention between clubs and fans. Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett even hinted at potential misconduct within PGMOL system with his tweet suggesting “levels of incompetence within [PGMOL system].” To suggest otherwise would be far-fetched.

4. Ethan Pinnock’s goal against Arsenal

Liverpool fans are understandably furious after seeing Luis Diaz’s goal disallowed against Tottenham, yet even with carefully devised protocols it remains possible for such mistakes to take place in football.

VAR system has become a source of frustration in football, due to its inconsistent and subjective application often leading to goals being disallowed due to inconsistent interpretation or wrong application by VAR officials. But Hanlon’s Razor still applies: Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity!

Liverpool must focus their energies this week on what matters, not what happened last weekend, to have any chance at defeating Brighton. Otherwise, their opponent could suffer more than expected.

5. Luis Suarez’s goal against Manchester City

Jurgen Klopp may have moved past the controversy surrounding Luis Diaz’s mistakenly disallowed goal against Tottenham, but his side could still face an arduous Europa League campaign this season.

Defending Champions; Toulouse Beaten Home! (1-0) in Group Match 1. In order to progress further in the competition and qualify for knockout stages.

At the Etihad Stadium, it was evident that Manchester City weren’t as far ahead in this competition than they seemed at first glance.

Lionel Messi was an unstoppable force against City’s defense, dodging past challenges and lighting up the pitch with his incredible footwork. He set up Suarez’s second goal when he laid on a pass to Jordi Alba who prodded it home for Suarez to score.
