Reading Baby’s Favorite Books

Although it can be exhausting for parents to reread baby’s favorite books, repetition is very important in developing baby’s language skills. By hearing their favorite books over and over, babies are interacting with language, learning vocabulary and associating words with the illustrations. By hearing the same books repeatedly, babies pick up patterns of language and may actually learn to read.

When your baby likes a book, they will want to hear it again and again. This is actually a good thing. Your baby wants to learn all they can from p-library the book. Since babies have the ability to easily memorize all sorts of things, your baby is memorizing the order of the words on the page. If you throw in some text pointing, your baby will learn the words on the page as they hear them being read.

You can have some fun with your baby while reading their favorite stories. You can jumble up the words and see if baby takes notice. This is a good way to determine what your baby is getting from the story.

You may also decide to leave out certain words and have your baby fill in the missing words. You can do this while pointing to the word and pausing. This allows your child time to look at the text and say the word. Since they have heard the story so many times, they already know what word is supposed to come next. Now they are making the association between what they already know and the written form of the word.

There are all kinds of methods around for teaching babies to read, but the simplest and most fun way is to read lots of books, over and over again. Once you discover your baby’s favorite stories, read them often. While it is important that baby hears new stories too, it is important to keep the old favorites around.

Reading to your child creates a strong bond between you. Good stories can spark creativity in your interactions with your child. Children can pretend to be a character from a favorite book. You can use language that you have learned from a story during the day. You can quote lines from books and your baby will immediately know this is a special language between you. After you have read a book repeatedly and just can’t bear to read it again, tell your child to read it to you. They may just surprise you.
