Unlocking Oracle Potential: Real-time Strategies for Oracle Legacy System Integration

DXC has long been at the forefront of modernization, helping organizations transition to the cloud, conducting in-depth digital transformation assessments, and providing world-class hosting and IT solutions globally. A few years ago, DXC and AuraPlayer, a leader in Oracle legacy system modernization, embarked on a partnership to empower Oracle Forms users to modernize their legacy applications and embrace next-generation solutions.

Recently, AuraPlayer and DXC worked on a joint bid for a cutting-edge time and management system. For this bid, AuraPlayer developed a prototype showcasing a robust time and management system that featured advanced functionalities such as facial recognition for secure check-ins and check-outs and geolocation validation to ensure location accuracy. It also utilized analytic dashboards to allow users to curate personalized reports and graphs, drawing live data from Oracle Forms systems into a responsive Ionic app seamlessly optimized for both desktop and mobile devices. Additionally, the pre-built templates aligned with the organization’s unique business requirements and brand identity. The solution bridged the gap between back-office legacy systems and the demands of today’s dynamic, mobile-first world.

Alex Gorbatovsky, AuraPlayer’s R&D leader, led the development effort. Alex has a wealth of experience modernizing Oracle Time and Labor applications, so as the project demanded varied technical skills such as Angular, React, Ionic, and others, Alex was just the person to deliver the innovative solution tailored to the customer’s needs.

Another recent project involved upgrading a global Fortune 500 company’s Oracle Forms 6.0, running on an outdated AIX operating system, to Oracle Forms 12c patch 19 on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. Following the Oracle Forms upgrade, the project involved “lifting and shifting” the on-premise system to the cloud, leaving the outdated AIX system behind.

In 2024, it’s legitimate to question why a company would choose to upgrade Oracle Forms instead of abandoning it. In reality, system modernization rarely involves an across-the-board overhaul. Despite the temptation to widely and rapidly adopt new technologies, big leaps (e.g., migration, cloud, re-development, etc.) are best broken down into several risk-free, secure, manageable, and impactful steps. In this way, businesses can implement digital assistants, mobility apps, automation (RPA), modern UIs, and a wide range of integrations (APIs), incrementally achieving their long-term modernization plans at a lower cost and risk.

Look at it this way: with full migration projects tying up resources for 5 to 20 years, the smartest strategy for achieving maximum ROI now preserves the stability and functionality of a legacy system backend while enhancing the user experience through cutting-edge technologies, allowing systems to be reimagined for today’s workforce.

The “lift and shift” approach, also known as “digital decoupling”, has proven successful for many of DXC’s and AuraPlayer’s customers. This strategy, inspired by mainframe modernization, leverages new frontend capabilities while integrating with microservices / RPA automations that run on top of the mainframe backend. Similarly, when applied to Oracle backend systems, this approach is low-risk and delivers immediate benefits by modernizing the user experience on the front end while leveraging microservices, RPA, and REST APIs to retain the backend.

Organizations that embrace this strategy report a 300-400% ROI over 3-5 years, driven by enhanced agility, faster time-to-market, and lower operational costs.

Modern UIs replace the original Oracle EBS interface

2025 is just around the corner. Forecasters predict continued economic uncertainty worldwide. As a result, most businesses will seek to restrain spending. This is the time to adopt a modernization strategy that balances sustainability, agility, and ROI from existing investments with next-generation functionality. You can sit back and wait, or you can take advantage of what’s on offer.
