From Athens to the World: How Obrela Built a Cyber Risk Management Powerhouse

In the sprawling and often fragmented world of cybersecurity, few companies have managed to carve out a truly integrated approach to cyber risk management. Obrela, founded in 2010, has done exactly that, growing from a locally focused security firm into a global provider operating across more than 25 countries.
In its early years, Obrela served clients primarily within Greece, developing the operational foundations and technical expertise that would later fuel its international ambitions. As the global demand for cybersecurity services accelerated through the 2010s, the company seized the moment, expanding its footprint across the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region and gradually repositioning itself as a serious player on the world stage.
A Platform Built for Scale
A defining moment in this expansion came in 2018, when Obrela earned a place in the Gartner Market Guide for Managed Detection and Response, a listing it has maintained multiple times since, and later appeared in the Forrester European MDR providers report from 2022 onwards. For a company that had started as a regional operator, these inclusions signaled something far more significant: Obrela was no longer simply competing locally. It was being measured against the best in the world.
Capital investment played a critical role in enabling this growth. Funding from EOS Group and the Latsis Foundation supported the company’s expansion efforts, underpinned product development, and drove the evolution of its proprietary platform, Swordfish. The platform, which Obrela has described as an “Cyber Command Platform,” consolidates security data into a unified environment, enabling real-time analytics, governance, risk and compliance functions, and coordinated incident response across distributed enterprise environments. It is, in many ways, the technological backbone that differentiates Obrela from competitors who rely on patchwork tool integrations.
The 2021 acquisition of Encode, a threat intelligence and cybersecurity provider with operations in Greece and the United Arab Emirates, further accelerated the company’s growth trajectory. Following the acquisition, Obrela reported year-over-year increases in both workforce and financial performance, reinforcing the strategic logic behind the deal.
Integration Over Fragmentation
Today, Obrela employs more than 280 people and serves over 250 customers spanning sectors including finance, energy, telecommunications, manufacturing, maritime, and healthcare. Its offices in Athens, London, Cologne, Riyadh, and Dubai reflect a deliberate geographic strategy, positioning the company at the intersection of European regulatory complexity and the rapidly growing cybersecurity demands of the Middle East.
What sets Obrela apart is not simply its scale, but the breadth and coherence of its service model. Rather than offering point solutions, the company integrates managed detection and response, managed risk and controls, continuous threat exposure management, digital forensics and incident response, professional services, and offensive services into a unified framework. This approach directly addresses one of the most persistent challenges in enterprise cybersecurity: the fragmentation that arises when organizations rely on dozens of disconnected tools and vendors.
Trust, Credentials, and a Global Reputation
Its credentials further reinforce this positioning. Obrela holds CREST certification, has been recognized as an Assured Cyber Incident Response Provider by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), and is accredited under the Dubai Cyber Force Program, enabling it to deliver penetration testing and incident response services for government and critical infrastructure projects in the UAE. Membership in the Microsoft Intelligent Security Association (MISA) adds another layer of collaborative reach, connecting Obrela with a broader ecosystem of security providers.
From a modest operation in Athens to a globally recognized cybersecurity firm, Obrela’s story is one of disciplined growth, strategic investment, and a consistent bet on integration over fragmentation. In an industry where complexity is the norm and trust is everything, that kind of coherence is increasingly rare and increasingly valuable.
